What to expect during your mobile ultrasound and consult appointment
Scheduling
• Because BVIMS is a mobile service, arrival for appointments may vary due to traffic, emergencies, cancellations and add-on cases. It is advised to have the pet dropped off earlier than the scheduled appointment time. If there are cancellations, we will call to check if the appointment can be moved up. Adding on an additional patient to a current appointment slot is usually no problem but please call beforehand to verify availability.
• A two-hour window at time of scheduling will be given. You will receive a call 20-30 minutes before arrival. This phone call is for the front staff to communicate to the doctor/technician that is preparing the patient, to ensure that the patient is on-site, sedated (if needed) and all case history has been submitted.
• Dr. Bostrom will be unable to fully interpret your case until all necessary paperwork and medical records are submitted. Submission of medical records, labs and radiographs can be done through the www.yourviewdr.com website.
• A veterinary technician or assistant will be needed to hold the pet during the exam. If sedation or anesthesia is used, monitoring by a veterinary technician should be provided. The exam usually takes 20-30 minutes per patient.
• It is strongly encouraged that the attending veterinarian be in the building or available to discuss the case during the appointment. If not available please round the case with a colleague so that a veterinarian is available to discuss the case or make medical recommendations to the client.
• Owner attendance for any consult and ultrasound exam is not permitted due to liability issues.
• A dark quiet room is requested for the study.
• Some hospital supplies may be requested if fluid removal or aspirates are performed.
• It is recommended to get consent from the pet’s owner prior to the appointment for sedation and additional procedures like aspirates if needed.
Patient preparation
• Unless otherwise discussed patients should be fasted for 12 hours prior to ultrasound exam.
• If time allows, please have the abdomen shaved. If unsure of margins wait for Dr. Bostrom to arrive.
• Please inform owners that their pets will be shaved for the ultrasound.
• Please acquire approval from owner prior to appointment for sedation and aspirates in case needed.
• Please give oral sedation (if needed) 1-2 hours prior to scheduled appointment.
Sedating
• Sedation may be advisable or necessary for abdominal exams depending upon the need for motion control, patient's temperament, presence of painful conditions and other factors. For tissue sampling (aspirates and fluid removal) sedation may be required.
• Patient comfort and reduced anxiety with sedation will give the best diagnostic yield for abdominal ultrasounds.
• Administration of any drugs and monitoring of the patient are the responsibilities of the requesting referring veterinarian.
• Some recommendations:
o Oral (give 2-4 hours before appointment):
Trazadone 2.5-5mg/kg
Gabapentin 10-20mg/kg
o Injectable (given at time of appointment):
Butorphanol 0.2mg/kg IV or IM
Dexmedetomidine 5-20ug/kg IV or IM
